COLOMBIA ELEMENTAL LA AREPA, EL TROMPO Y LA CORBATA LA AREPA Esta tortilla o galleta de maíz, base elemental de la comida indígena, es el escudo con el cual se reconocen todos los habitantes del mundo "paisa", como son llamados los habitantes del departamento de Antioquia cuya capital es Medellín. Sin distinción de clase social, este alimento es compañía obligatoria de todas las comidas y simboliza a la vez el sexo y la fortuna. La arepa es el pasaporte que permite entrar a observar una sociedad en conflicto, donde las diferencias parecieran disolverse ante este apetitoso y "sagrado" alimento.
CORN BREAD This study of three elements of Colombian life leads to a greater understanding of the country in general. The arepa (equivalent of the corn tortilla) is the staple of rich and poor alike, especially in the Antioquia region and the city of Medellín, the region’s capital. The flat corn bread is one of the unifying characteristics of a country beset by innumerable differences. Although factories now manufacture the bread, many Colombians prefer the hand-made version fashioned by female family members. The video also explores the difference meanings of the word arepa and its variations in the Colombian dialect.
